Jessica Pellegrini is a rising star in Montalcino. She is the owner and winemaker of this tiny 7 hectare estate in the Montosoli Cru (the first cru in the history of Brunello di Montalcino, and always famous for wines of extreme elegance). North of Montalcino, Jessica describes her location as ‘the ocean side’. It is here where you find Altesino, Le Chiuse, and many other legends of Brunello.
Montosoli is a hill north of Montalcino that rises to about 300 metres, with Jessica’s plantings located just south of the apex. The soil composition is of silty clays, marls and limestone. These are very well draining soils that help produce a more elegant style of wine. You also have the previously mentioned ocean influence, with winds arriving from the ocean about 80 kilometres away.
Vines were planted in 2000, and Jessica’s first vintage was produced in 2010. Self taught, she was fortunate to produce her first bottling during the vintage of the century, but it is evident that this was no stroke of luck. All of her subsequent vintages are truly exquisite, and show the more elegant style of Brunello that Montosoli is famous for.
Jessica’s vineyards show real biodiversity on a property lined with multiple tree species, and the vines are enriched by ‘soyescio’ or in English, plants grown between rows of vines to enrich the soil. Even her horses, Vilma and Blu live on the property, and their manure is used as a natural fertilizer.
Jessica bottles completely by hand, her wines will ferment spontaneously (wild ambient yeasts) which is the only time the wine is under temperature-controlled conditions. She chooses large Slovenian Oak as her ageing vessel for her Sangiovese. She does not believe in temperature control in the winery, and believes that the wine matures with the cycles of the seasons. In the end, her wines are unfiltered, but she eventually racks off the lees after fermentation under a full moon to ensure the wine is clear and clean.
